The Louvre: The room of the Caryatides
Oil on canvas
Signed lower left: M. Ventuejol
65.5 x 81 cm
Since its opening in 1793, many generations of artists of all nationalities have followed one another at the Louvre to copy the masterpieces of the masters of the past.
Here the artist chooses as subject the famous collection of ancient sculptures, located in the room of the caryatids on the ground floor of the Sully wing. A photograph dating from 1895 allows us to recognize the room in this arrangement.
It seemed like an amusing wink to present this canvas on the occasion of Fine Art Paris, which is held in the very heart of the Louvre a few hundred years later.
