Landscape painter, Georges Leroux won the Prix de Rome in 1906. In addition to Italian subjects, we know of many views of Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhône. Avignon, Baux-de-Provence come back repeatedly in his work.
The work is part of a set of four Italian landscapes (Villa Borghese, Villa Medicis, La Villa d'Este and the Forum), commissioned by the French Ambassador to Poland Mr. Jules Laroche, for the decoration of the dining room of his house in Dinard.
